Randy Pausch, a former University of Virginia professor, gives his final lecture on time management to a packed house on the Charlottesville, Va., campus in November 2007. Pausch, a Carnegie Mellon University computer scientist whose "last lecture" about facing terminal cancer became an international sensation and a best-selling book, died this week from complications of pancreatic cancer at 47.
Book Description
"We cannot change the cards we are dealt, just how we play the hand."
--Randy Pausch
A lot of professors give talks titled "The Last Lecture." Professors are asked to consider their demise and to ruminate on what matters most to them. And while they speak, audiences can't help but mull the same question: What wisdom would we impart to the world if we knew it was our last chance? If we had to vanish tomorrow, what would we want as our legacy?
When Randy Pausch, a computer science professor at Carnegie Mellon, was asked to give such a lecture, he didn't have to imagine it as his last, since he had recently been diagnosed with terminal cancer. But the lecture he gave--"Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams"--wasn't about dying. It was about the importance of overcoming obstacles, of enabling the dreams of others, of seizing every moment (because "time is all you have...and you may find one day that you have less than you think"). It was a summation of everything Randy had come to believe. It was about living.
In this book, Randy Pausch has combined the humor, inspiration and intelligence that made his lecture such a phenomenon and given it an indelible form. It is a book that will be shared for generations to come.
Questions for Randy Pausch
We were shy about barging in on Randy Pausch's valuable time to ask him a few questions about his expansion of his famous Last Lecture into the book by the same name, but he was gracious enough to take a moment to answer. (See Randy to the right with his kids, Dylan, Logan, and Chloe.) As anyone who has watched the lecture or read the book will understand, the really crucial question is the last one, and we weren't surprised to learn that the "secret" to winning giant stuffed animals on the midway, like most anything else, is sheer persistence.
Amazon.com: I apologize for asking a question you must get far more often than you'd like, but how are you feeling?
Pausch: The tumors are not yet large enough to affect my health, so all the problems are related to the chemotherapy. I have neuropathy (numbness in fingers and toes), and varying degrees of GI discomfort, mild nausea, and fatigue. Occasionally I have an unusually bad reaction to a chemo infusion (last week, I spiked a 103 fever), but all of this is a small price to pay for walkin' around.
Amazon.com: Your lecture at Carnegie Mellon has reached millions of people, but even with the short time you apparently have, you wanted to write a book. What did you want to say in a book that you weren't able to say in the lecture?
Pausch: Well, the lecture was written quickly--in under a week. And it was time-limited. I had a great six-hour lecture I could give, but I suspect it would have been less popular at that length ;-).
A book allows me to cover many, many more stories from my life and the attendant lessons I hope my kids can take from them. Also, much of my lecture at Carnegie Mellon focused on the professional side of my life--my students, colleagues and career. The book is a far more personal look at my childhood dreams and all the lessons I've learned. Putting words on paper, I've found, was a better way for me to share all the yearnings I have regarding my wife, children and other loved ones. I knew I couldn't have gone into those subjects on stage without getting emotional.
Amazon.com: You talk about the importance--and the possibility!--of following your childhood dreams, and of keeping that childlike sense of wonder. But are there things you didn't learn until you were a grownup that helped you do that?
Pausch: That's a great question. I think the most important thing I learned as I grew older was that you can't get anywhere without help. That means people have to want to help you, and that begs the question: What kind of person do other people seem to want to help? That strikes me as a pretty good operational answer to the existential question: "What kind of person should you try to be?"
Amazon.com: One of the things that struck me most about your talk was how many other people you talked about. You made me want to meet them and work with them--and believe me, I wouldn't make much of a computer scientist. Do you think the people you've brought together will be your legacy as well?
Pausch: Like any teacher, my students are my biggest professional legacy. I'd like to think that the people I've crossed paths with have learned something from me, and I know I learned a great deal from them, for which I am very grateful. Certainly, I've dedicated a lot of my teaching to helping young folks realize how they need to be able to work with other people--especially other people who are very different from themselves.
Amazon.com: And last, the most important question: What's the secret for knocking down those milk bottles on the midway?
Pausch: Two-part answer:
1) long arms
2) discretionary income / persistence
Actually, I was never good at the milk bottles. I'm more of a ring toss and softball-in-milk-can guy, myself. More seriously, though, most people try these games once, don't win immediately, and then give up. I've won *lots* of midway stuffed animals, but I don't ever recall winning one on the very first try. Nor did I expect to. That's why I think midway games are a great metaphor for life.

Save Money: Use Your Kindle as Newspaper Prices Increase
Posted by kindlehelper | 12:45 AM | 0 comments »The New York Times newspaper will increase its daily newsstand price by 25 cents, to $1.50, effective Aug. 18, Janet L. Robinson, the president and chief executive, announced in a conference call with analysts. The company had already announced a 4.5percent subscription price increase that begins this month. It raised both subscription and newsstand prices in July 2007. The company, like the entire newspaper industry, continues to be battered by the economic downturn and the long-term shift of readers and advertisers from print to the Internet.
The move comes a week after The Wall Street Journal said it would boost its newsstand price by 50 cents to $2 starting July 28 to reflect both new content and higher costs.
Check out the papers on for your Kindle. You will not only save money, but you will also have them delivered automatically to your Kindle, ready for you when you wake up! Right now the NY Times monthly subscription on Amazon is $13.99 and the monthly price of the Wall Street Journal is $9.99.

Hot news from Cruchgear, someone "let it slip" that the new Amazon Kindle models will hit stores this holiday season.
"The first is an updated version with the same sized screen, a smaller form factor, and an improved interface. The source told us that Amazon has “skipped three or four generations,” comparing the old Kindle to the 1st gen iPod and the new version to something like the sexy iPod Mini.
The second new model, which is shaped like an 8 1/2 x 11-inch piece of paper, is considerably bigger than the current model and should be available next year. Both models should come in multiple colors and may be aimed at younger readers."

Custom Publishing News/Custom Content News: Time: Kindle content sales doubled in two months?
Posted by kindlehelper | 6:54 AM | 0 comments »Time: Kindle content sales doubled in two months?
While custom publishers would have to pay quite a lot per magazine to get their custom content or digital magazines into Amazon's Kindle (and as such it isn't the best custom publishing platform yet), it is interesting to note that Josh Quittner over at Time suggests that Kindle content sales have doubled in the last two months:
"According to a source at Amazon, "on a title-by-title basis, of the 130,000 titles available on Kindle and in physical form, Kindle sales now make up over 12% of sales for those titles." Amazon is notoriously tight lipped about sales data, and the new line of business that the Kindle represents for the online retail powerhouse has been especially frustrating for analysts and media to parse. At a technology trade conference in May, CEO Jeff Bezos said that Kindle sales accounted for 6% of book titles sold for the Kindle and in print. So Amazon appears to be selling more e-books."

Even Warren Buffett Might be Getting a Kindle
Posted by kindlehelper | 12:00 AM | News | 0 comments »Julia Boorstin: I should start off with a question about this conference. I heard this morning that the Kindle is a big topic, talking about the publishing industry changing, and (Amazon CEO) Jeff Bezos made a presentation. I heard you don't even have a cell phone. What do you think of the Kindle?
Julia: You do!
Buffett: It's an 1893 model, I think. Alexander Graham Bell gave this to me personally. (Laughs.)
Julia: Does this mean you're going to be getting a Kindle?

Buffett: I probably will, after hearing about it today. And I ran into a number of people that have Kindles and who are just in love with them. In fact, a woman that is the wife of another attendee here, came in on the plane with us, and she was using a Kindle and was wildly enthusiastic about it.
Julia: So this is going to be your new technology?
Buffett: Well, who knows? I mean, I kind of edge into technology. I'm just getting into the 20th century. I'll be working on the 21st century pretty soon, yeah. (Laughs.)
Julia: What is the mood at this conference this year?
Buffett: Well, the mood .. I would say that people just love being here. That's what happens. I was at a barbeque last night and everybody had such a good time. So I have not yet heard a discouraging word, as we say in Wyoming. (Laughs.) But, I'm sure some of the people have got their own problems in their own businesses, but nobody's talked about it yet.

A recent user question: How do I reboot my Kindle when it's frozen?
Here are a couple of things you can try.
First see if you can press Alt-Shift-R, which is the keyboard short cut for a reboot. If it is really locked up this might not work.
There is a hard reset button underneath the back cover.
Typically, you should not have to reset your Kindle. In the unlikely event that you need to reset your Kindle, use a paper clip or other small object to press the Reset button on the left side of the back of the Kindle. Your Kindle will take a few minutes to restart.
Other users have suggested a combination of removing the battery and plugging in the A/C adapter when just the reset did not work.
1. Remove the battery
2. Plug in the ac adapter w/o the battery (this will clear the screen)
3. Put the battery back in and let it charge
Here is the link to those answers on Amazon:

If you can not get it reset, call Amazon customer service at 1-866-321-8851 as you may need a replacement.![]()

Steele admitted as much on a recent edition of Fox News' Hannity's America. Check out the video.

The United States has released 425 terrorists from Guantanamo, at least 50 of whom have returned to the battlefield to fight our troops.Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton both say they're fiscally responsible. But each has called for $1 trillion in tax increases over the next ten years -- and dressed them up as tax cuts!
Mainstream Media has been given marching orders from the Society of Professional Journalists: never refer to "Islamic terrorists" or "Muslim terrorists." And they are obeying! Whenever our brave agents disrupt a terror plot, The media dismisses the culprits as a gang of idiots -- lulling us into a false sense of security.
When it comes to lying, tone of voice is the best way we can tell. It was the exact right choice to have President Bush's former White House press secretary read his own book. He's got an strong, even baritone, with just a fringe of his Texas background. McClellan's a professional and speaks clearly and with conviction. We believe him. On the other hand, he is a professional and sounds as if he might be reading about somebody else. He sounds an even-tempered, likable guy. But that's how he sounded when he was living the life he now so regrets. Is he a great actor, or no actor at all? I wouldn't know how to bet. But the drama of that question makes this timely book a thrilling piece of audio. B.H.C. © AudioFile 2008, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine

Welcome to Chelsea's world -- a place where absurdity reigns supreme and a quick wit is the best line of defense. In this hilarious, deliciously skewed collection, Chelsea mines her past for stories about her family, relationships, and career that are at once singular and ridiculous. Are You There, Vodka? It's Me, Chelsea showcases the candor and irresistible turns of phrase that have made her one of the freshest voices in comedy today. "
Amazon Best of the Month, June 2008: When author Douglas Preston moved his family to Florence he never expected he would soon become obsessed and entwined in a horrific crime story whose true-life details rivaled the plots of his own bestselling thrillers. While researching his next book, Preston met Mario Spezi, an Italian journalist who told him about the Monster of Florence, Italy's answer to Jack the Ripper, a terror who stalked lovers' lanes in the Italian countryside. The killer would strike at the most intimate time, leaving mutilated corpses in his bloody wake over a period from 1968 to 1985. One of these crimes had taken place in an olive grove on the property of Preston's new home. That was enough for him to join "Monsterologist" Spezi on a quest to name the killer, or killers, and bring closure to these unsolved crimes. Local theories and accusations flourished: the killer was a cuckolded husband; a local aristocrat; a physician or butcher, someone well-versed with knives; a satanic cult. Thomas Harris even dipped into "Monster" lore for some of Hannibal Lecter's more Grand Guignol moments in Hannibal. Add to this a paranoid police force more concerned with saving face and naming a suspect (any suspect) than with assessing the often conflicting evidence on hand, and an unbelievable twist that finds both authors charged with obstructing justice, with Spezi jailed on suspicion of being the Monster himself. The Monster of Florence is split into two sections: the first half is Spezi's story, with the latter bringing in Preston's updated involvement on the case. Together these two parts create a dark and fascinating descent into a landscape of horror that deserves to be shelved between In Cold Blood and Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. --Brad Thomas Parsons PAPERBACK TRADE FICTION

FREE Sherrilyn Kenyon Download
In anticipation of the upcoming release of Acheron in her bestselling Dark-Hunter series, you can download Sherrilyn Kenyon's Seize the Night for free until July 3rd. Seize the Night follows Valerius who isn't a popular Dark-Hunter--he's a Roman, which means that the largely Greek Hunters have a major grudge against him and his civilization for superceding them. To make things worse, he's very conscious of his aristocratic background and breeding. So it serves him right when he runs into Tabitha Devereaux. She's sassy, sexy, and completely unwilling to take him seriously (not to mention that she's the twin sister of the wife of former Dark-Hunter Kyrian--Val's mortal enemy). What Tabitha does take seriously is hunting and killing vampires, and soon she and Val have to grapple with the deadliest of all Daimons--one who's managed to come back from the dead, and one who holds a serious grudge against both of them. To win against evil, Val will have to loosen up, learn to trust, and put everything on the line to protect a man he hates and a woman who drives him nuts.

Can I buy an audio book on CD or get it in another format and then transfer
it to the Kindle?
Here is the story on the audio books. Right now the only "official" site for purchasing audio books for your Kindle is Audible.com, which is actually an Amazon company. The books have to be downloaded to a PC and then uploaded back to the Kindle via USB or SD card. You must use the AudibleManager to activate your Kindle so you can use them. The problem is the software is Windows based so if you have a MAC, you will need to find someone with a Windows PC to help you get it set up.
Instructions for using audio files with Kindle also appear in Chapter 3 and Chapter 8 of the Kindle User's Guide (.PDF). Kindle User Guide.pdf
And here is the link to the FAQ on Audible on the Amazon site: Audible FAQ on Amazon
The pricing on the audio books is not as attractive as the pricing on the regular Kindle books. For example, What Happened: Inside the Bush White House and Washington's Culture of Deception By: Scott McClellan is $9.99 as an ebook download for the Kindle, but is $23.07 on Audible.com as an audio book download. Audible does have volume pricing plans available, but may not be an option if you just want to try it out.
Your other option is you can upload an MP3 audio book to your Kindle. You can transfer your MP3 files to Kindle by copying them to the "music" folder on your Kindle or SD memory card. Scroll to the Menu and select Experimental
Select Play Music on the screen shown
This will continue to play until you click the Stop Music option in Experimental (or the Alt+P keyboard shortcut). You can jump to the next track using Alt+F.
I have also read that you can transfer MP3s to the Audible folder on the device or on your SD card. Once you have the MP3 files in the Audible folder, the Kindle treats them just like other audiobook files allowing you to jump back 30 seconds, skip ahead 30 seconds, play and pause audio.
Hopefully this is enough information for you to decide if it is worth trying. You may just want to try it with a Podcast for fun or check out this website which has downloads for free of public domain books: http://librivox.org/

Create Custom Screensavers for your Kindle
Posted by kindlehelper | 7:41 AM | screensaver | 1 comments »Thanks to Reversing Everything: Hacking the Kindle here us how you can create custom screensavers for your Kindle.
Attach the Kindle via USB. On either the mounted Kindle drive or the mounted sd card, create a folder called "pictures". Inside of that folder create a folder called "screensavers".
Add your pictures to the screensavers folder. For best results, your photos should be 600x800.
While in the Kindle's home menu, press alt-z.
This will create a new book called "screensavers". Open it. You'llsee each of your pictures. You can advance through them with the prev. page and next page buttons. On each photo, press Alt-Shift-0 to set the viewed picture as one of your screensaver pictures. Press it only once.
This will replace the kindle's native screensaver pictures with your own. If you're unhappy with the new screensaver pictures, mount your Kindle again and delete the screensavers folder in your Kindle's root folder (note that this is not the one you created in your picturesfolder; the Kindle creates this folder when you press alt-shift-0). After deleting the folder, you'll have your original kindle screensavers back.![]()

Kindle Helpdesk Frequently Asked Questions - How Do I?
Posted by kindlehelper | 7:24 AM | Audible, Clippings, delete book, Document Conversion, email, FAQ, How Do I? | 0 comments »- I am having trouble figuring out the My Clippings file. How do I delete stuff?
Once a bookmark, note, highlight, or clipped page is added to the "My Clippings" file, it cannot be removed individually from the "My Clippings" file. You can edit the "My Clippings" file on your computer and save it back to your Kindle if you want to edit the contents of the file. Alternatively, you can move or remove the "My Clippings" file from Kindle and a new one will be created the next time you add a clipping or annotation to any content. Altering your "My Clippings" file does not affect any notes, bookmarks, or highlights you've made in individual documents. Those items will still be present the next time you open an item for reading, and you will be able to use them for navigation and reference. Also, the "My Clippings" file is simply a storage place for the notes you make. While viewing the file, you cannot navigate through to the materials referenced in the file. - How do I convert documents so I can read them on my Kindle?
Personal documents in file formats not automatically recognized by Kindle may be converted to a Kindle recognized format using e-mail. E-mail an attachment to a Kindle e-mail address and Amazon converts the file and delivers it to your Kindle or back to your computer. The following file formats can be converted via e-mail for viewing on Kindle: * Microsoft Word (.DOC) * Structured HTML (.HTML, .HTM) * JPEG (.JPEG, .JPG) * GIF (.GIF) * PNG (.PNG) * BMP (.BMP) The above file types can also be combined into a compressed ZIP (.ZIP) file. ZIP files are automatically opened up by the conversion service, converted to Kindle format, and sent to your Kindle or computer as specified. Converting PDF Files PDF conversion is experimental. The experimental category represents the features we are working on to enhance the Kindle experience even further. You can email your PDFs wirelessly to your Kindle. Due to PDF's fixed layout format, some complex PDF files might not format correctly on your Kindle. Sending Personal Documents to Your Kindle Getting your documents delivered to your Kindle is easy. Simply attach any compatible file format to a new e-mail message and send it to your Kindle's e-mail address. To send and convert your personal documents: 1. Open a new e-mail message in your e-mail client. 2. Check to make sure the "From" address is on your approved e-mail address list. 3. Enter the desired Kindle e-mail address in the "To" field. Use the "name"@kindle.com address for wireless delivery or "name"@free.kindle.com for free delivery to the e-mail address associated with your Amazon.com account. 4. Attach your document or documents to the e-mail message. If you are sending multiple files, you can compress them into a .zip file. 5. Send the e-mail with attachments. A subject line is not needed. - How do I set up my email address?
Establishing Kindle E-Mail Addresses To successfully send a personal document to Kindle, you'll need to establish your Kindle e-mail addresses to which your personal documents will be sent.
